In most of Asian countries, people are using this water pump to fetch water from well and the main line of water supply. Actually this is the most common and cheap water pump. A person can buy within 40$. They are available in cheap rates and effective too. It is in continuous use that’s why it need maintenance. Most of the people don’t know the reapir of those pumps. So, here I am giving some ideas so that a person may repair it himself.
There are several parts of this water pump, I will give snapshots, so that you would be able to understand what it is. The most common problem in this water pump is, not fetching water or discharging water. This is because of valves in the water pump. The valves need to be changed. Here I am telling you how to change the valves.
Water Pump Repair:
At first you will need to see the 4 studs in the pump. That keep the pump air tight and don’t let the pressure come out. As you can see in the picture.
These are studs that you need to loosen to open the head of the pump. They are mostly in quantity of four in every corner. They may be rusted just like you can see in the picture. If they are not loosing then you shall use machine oil or rust cleaner. The number of the bolt is 14 and you can use 14 to 15 number of key wrench to loose it. After getting out all the four studs, disconnect the two lines from the pump, one is suction line and other is discharge line. These lines shall separate before you pull the head of the pump. If they remain attached with pump then you will not be able to pull out the pump head.
After pulling the head, you may see a lot of rust inside. The head will look like this one in the picture. It is not necessary that all the pumps are in square, most of the pumps are in round shape. So, don’t worry, if you have round shape. The head is just to store the pressure and release the pressure of water in the discharge, because the water need some space to make pressure. If the head is big then the motor will build more pressure, but it will take higher capacity of motor in the pump.
You shall keep this thing in your mind that there is a rubber seal on the edge of the head. You shall take care of that rubber seal, because this prevent pressure to come out. If you already have a rubber seal then it is ok. I am calling it rubber seal, but you can call it rubber gasket. Actually it is a gasket. Experienced plumbers can change it easily, but if you don’t have experience then I will recommend you not to touch it. This is because this is a thing that is under higher pressure and it can leak, if there is a space of a needle.
After removing the head, you can see that there is a fiber plate / iron plate on the block of head. This is actually mechanics. These are the valves that you can see in the photo. The position of those valves is also important, because if you don’t put them on appropriate position then the suction will become discharge and the discharge will become suction.
This kind of pumps have two main rubber gaskets. one is above the this valve plate and other is below the valve plate. usually it sticks with the head and one stick with the lower block. It happens when you are using fiber glass plate, if you are using iron plate then it may stick on plate. I will recommend you to replace the iron from fiber, because it is good to use and durable too. Another thing is use of good valves in the plate. Because there are certain quality of valves in the markets.
This is a photo of valve, some people call it piston because it works like piston, but it is valve, you can also see my video on this. This valve consist of four things, one is simple umbrella type thing along with one spring. One cap with hole in mid, and then a quarter pin at the end. As you can see in the picture, I have grabbed it in that position.
You will need to separate these parts, if you want to change the valves from fiber plate.
Have a look on inner block of the water pump, there is a rubber gasket on that block, you can see it. The block is fill with water, it is necessary. This block has a bore glass and this bore glass has two bogies that make pressure for suction and discharge.
This is the position of the valves. You can see that two of them are in same position on each side, but the section is different. If we see in section wise then in one section, they are in different position to each other. It is recommended to change the valves one by one. Just unpin the quarter pin from the valve. remove the washer, then spring. pull the rubber valve out. Open the new valve and reverse the steps as you did in removal. By following this method, you will be able to change all the four valves. If the valves are already in good condition then see if there is something stick with these valves, that might be a wrapper or anything else. remove it and the re-assemble the water pump.
Make it sure that the rubber gasket is properly stick with the head and inner block. fix the upper head by putting on the fiber plate / valve plate but slowly, and make it sure that the valves are not hitting the walls of the block or upper head. If they are touching then the pressure may break the valves and you will need to change them. So do this thing slowly, after sitting that heads, insert the studs on the four holes, tight them in cross position. If you tight the front left then you shall tight the back right. It will be cross position. Tight them and then switch on the motor and see, if it is working fine. If not, then need to change the bogie in the inner block.
